When you walk through the halls of our school, there are certain people you come into contact with that you know will be important. They are the people that greet you, may have an inside joke with you, or it is the one administrator you trust. One such person is Vice Principal and Athletic Director Michelle Bruce.
She always tries to bring out the joy and intelligence of students at UACHS by creating events like 5W Wednesday to celebrate our teachers, and Try something new Tuesdays to help our students to not only try new activities but to also socialize with one another without screens.
As Women’s history month approaches, it is important to celebrate her for her tireless effort in making our school building a fun learning environment that you look forward to coming to everyday.
Prior to becoming the school’s athletic director Bruce was our crisis counselor where she helped students going through severe emotional distress grow and understand their own feelings. After she was appointed athletic director, our team joined the Hudson County Interscholastic Athletic League, where we remain to this day. Bruce was the only female athletic director in the HCIAL at the time, making her a great role model for all women in leadership. She is a reminder that despite one facing unfamiliarity you can still go out there and chase your dreams.
“Sports shaped my life, making me mentally and physically stronger and teaching me teamwork,” said Bruce. “This gave me the confidence to pursue my goals; As the only female athletic director in my league, I had to push through my nerves and find support, even when I didn’t believe in myself.”
As a leader Bruce shows that she not only cares for our future by implementing important rules but she emphasizes how she wants us to enjoy school as well, without it feeling like a chore; because sometimes rules are not punishment and all you need in life is a little structure to keep you in check.
“I believe in being strict as rules create order and prepare students for success. But I also want to cheer you on and make school a place you want to come to. That’s why I support activities and appreciate Lugo’s help,” said Bruce. “I’m also very crafty and want to help others, so I created programs like 5W Wednesdays, Try something new Tuesdays and new friend Fridays to celebrate both students and staff.”
Bruce’s words not only reflect her dedication to structure, support and our community but it also highlights the kind of leadership worth recognizing during Women’s history month. Especially as we honor the woman that makes inspiring efforts right here at our school.
She reminds us what powerful female leadership can be when it’s rooted in fairness, empathy and making others feel heard. She showcases how representation matters and seeing other women in leadership can make spaces feel less intimidating and more achievable for the next generation.
By creating programs that uplifts others she is the embodiment of community, and one of the pillars here at UACHS. Bruce instills confidence and is an inspiration for not just the women and girls present at the school, but also for all those who she has been in contact with throughout her tenure here.
