One of the first signs that Christmas is approaching is not snowfall or shopping crowds but rather the return of the holiday playlist. Whether you are decorating the tree, baking cookies, or just trying to survive finals season, a handful of iconic songs are once again filling homes, stores, and tik tok feeds.
First on the list is Jingle Bell Rock, first released in 1957 has never left the holiday rotation. Its upbeat tempo and retro charm makes it perfect for short choreographed dances. Music streamers never fail to include this song in playlists titled “holiday vibes,” half of the time being first in the slot.
Right after is Wham!’s bittersweet melody and a classic “Last Christmas.” Decades after its release the song continues to resonate, maybe because the sound of heartbreak hits harder against the backdrop of twinkling lights. This season UACHS students are embracing the song as one of their favorites. This track is the ultimate “soft christmas” melody, the one you play when you are sipping hot cocoa and pretending you are in a music video. Several artists have released covers and new songs but none mimic or come near the magic of the original sound of the 80’s.
Next is Ariana Grande’s “Santa Tell Me” which has quickly become a modern staple. Despite being only a decade old it has earned a place in the holiday canon with its catchy chorus and playful plea for romantic clarity. It is the perfect mix of old school charm and today’s pop sparkle.
Of course no christmas playlist, absolutely none is complete without Mariah Carey’s powerhouse hit “All I Want for Christmas is You.” The song declares the official start of the holiday season each year as it rockets back up the charts. Carey’s voice, the bells and the irresistible rhythm work perfectly together to create a song that listeners have no other choice than to sing along to.
Next on the lineup is “Winter Wonderland,” a song as cozy as a knitted scarf no matter who it is sung by, evokes the magic of snowfall, sleigh rides, and quiet glowing evenings.
Topping many playlists is Andy Williams’ cheerful classic “It’s the Most Wonderful Time of the Year.” With its sweeping orchestra and festive optimism it has become the unofficial soundtrack of December. Searching up “vintage christmas” on music platforms will have this song appear at the top, its joyful tone sets the mood for the whole playlist.
Not far behind is “Rockin’ Around the Christmas Tree,” a Brenda Lee staple that never loses its spark. The song’s upbeat rhythm makes it perfect for decorating sessions and holiday parties, turning even the most chaotic living room into a scene from a classic holiday movie. Younger listeners have rediscovered the song, often including it in tik tok edits.
Slowing things down is the gentle and emotional “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas.” Whether performed by Judy Garland or Frank Sinatra or modern artists, the song adds a moment of quiet reflection to the season’s excitement. Many holiday playlists place it right in the middle to allow listeners to pause and unwind, creating a soft pause that captures both the bittersweet and the beautiful parts of winter.
- No matter your favorite track, one thing’s certain: the playlist of the season is always on repeat.
