The Holidays are right around the corner and you know that those winter nights just are not right without a good movie marathon. Well, you are just in luck. Here’s a list of some holiday movies that’ll make you laugh, cry, or at least keep you from falling asleep at those family get-togethers. So grab some hot cocoa, snuggle up on the living room sofa, and enjoy these movies.
First on our list is “The Santa Claus”: Divorced dad, Scott Calvin, accidentally causes Santa to fall off his roof, forcing him to take Santa’s place. Over the next year, he physically turns into Santa and must convince his family and psychologist that he is not crazy. This family friendly movie shows a good old fashioned holiday spirit missing from the modern world.
Next up we have “Elf,” a good natured family comedy. Buddy is a human raised as an elf who travels to New York City to find his biological father. He discovers that his father is on the “Naughty list” and tries to help him and his new family regain their Christmas spirit. The film benefits from Will Ferrell’s funny and charming performance as one of Santa’s biggest helpers.
No holiday season would be complete without the Christmas classic “Home Alone.” This humorous film is about a boy named Kevin who is accidentally left behind by his family when they go on vacation. While alone and loving his new found freedom he ends up protecting his house from two goofy burglars. It is a chaotic and funny film filled with irresistible charm.
“Happy New Year, Charlie Brown!,” an oldie but goodie, sure to brighten your year. Charlie Brown is stuck with a school report on War and Peace during the Christmas break, making it difficult for him to attend Peppermint Patty’s New Year’s Eve Party. He tries to balance reading the massive book with a desperate attempt to ask the Little Red Haired Girl to the party. It supports the idea of trying your best and shows you the importance of friends.
Another classic is Adam Sandler’s “Eight Crazy Nights,” which is many people’s favorite Hanukkah movie. Davey Stone, played by Adam Sandler, finds himself in trouble with the law after his wild ways go too far. In keeping with the holiday spirit, the judge gives Davey one last chance at redemption, he must spend the holiday performing community service as the assistant referee for the youth basketball league or go to jail. A little potty humor never hurt anyone, grab the remote and get to clickin.
In keeping with the Hanukkah theme, “Mistletoe & Menorahs.” This is a true feel good rom-com. Toy company executive Christy must learn about Hanukkah in order to impress a potential client, leading her to ask for help from Jonathan, a Jewish history teacher who needs to learn about Christmas to impress his new girlfriend’s father. It’s fun, cute, and really gets you into the Christmas spirit and the Hanukkah mood!
The last movie on our list is “Last Holiday.” a holiday tear jerker. Reclusive department store employee named Georgia Byrd, played by Queen Latifah, discovers she has a terminal illness with only a few weeks to live. She quits her job, liquidates her assets, and goes on a lavish trip to Europe where she embraces life, pursues her passions, and stands up for herself before her time runs out. It is amusing, feathery, and warm hearted, the sort of thing you might enjoy when laying down on a cold afternoon watching TV.
Whether you are laughing at “Elf” or crying at the “Last Holiday,” these movies bring back the seasonal magic that everyone needs every now and then. Now go get everyone together and relax, do not forget to hit Play and let the magic rush in.
