Christmas is known as the jolliest holiday and a chance to spread kindness and a chance to spread kindness, so how come it’s losing its cheer each year it’s celebrated? There are so many activities to choose from during this special month such as spending quality time with family, building gingerbread houses and even secret santa to uplift each other with a thoughtful gift. Even so, a tradition that has been here since the 13th century Christmas caroling, has been forgotten.
Christmas caroling has been replaced by the television at home and music that can be played from your phone. Individuals have decided if the caroling fun is not posted on social media then it’s not worth doing; even so, this idealist thought is now considered embarrassing and disruptive.
Christmas is all about the magical warm feeling that people get in their hearts because it brings families together and caroling adds that extra magic that makes the holidays bright. In the past knocking on people’s doors and singing was something that most came to expect, however, in recent times it is another danger that people must look out for. For example, the recent incident in Houston Texas where an 11 year old was playing a prank by doing a classic childhood game called ding dong ditch. This silly game became real in a matter of minutes as he was fatally shot twice in his back.

If something as innocuous as ding dong ditch suddenly falls under the category of being a precarious act for children, who is to say that Christmas caroling will not be next in line? The Christmas traditions of the past have evolved. We no longer expect a knock on the door and songs filled with cheer. Now it is all about the short form video and capturing moments instead of living them. In order to ensure that our Christmases stay merry and bright it is up to us to ensure that the songs continue to be heard.
