When it comes to public displays of affection (PDA), students feel that “cute” crosses into uncomfortable when said affection interrupts shared school spaces. Holding hands while walking is usually seen as harmless since it does not draw attention, but making out in the hallways or stairwells often makes nearby students feel awkward since oftentimes they interrupt shared spaces.
Depending on the person you are and the line you are willing to cross, PDA is either your expertise or the cause of you going to class late.
Anacelis Ortiz, a student attending Beloved Community Charter School believes that people should do what they want.
“I see PDA as cute; you can see how much the person loves the other and it makes you reflect on how you would like to be treated,” said Ortiz. “If you’re in public with your partner you should be allowed to show your affection towards them.”
Those that are on the side of PDA being cute can agree that things such as hugging, kissing and holding hands do not break any boundaries with others since PDA can reflect security in your relationship and can be seen as a connection between two people that has progressed making them feel confident. PDA can be a tangible and glowing representation of the connection these two people might feel, making them feel like they are in a bubble.
Despite this viewpoint there are students that disagree and believe that PDA is inappropriate and unnecessary as it can be seen as a way of overcomparing feelings that are not right within the relationship.
UACHS senior, Daniel Ragbeer believes that PDA can be a hindrance to others.
“As someone who is in a relationship and shows a small amount of pda, I always feel uncomfortable showing pda because I understand that hugging in the hallway is taking up space for someone to walk and get to class,” said Ragbeer. “Not only do people have to pass by but they have to get by you and that can not only be uncomfortable but seriously annoying.”
Ragbeer’s perspective of pda is one that is shared by many. People should be mindful of those around them.
No one should complain if a couple stops for a quick kiss here or a hug for a minute or two. However, when couples are in the hallways being late for class after several minutes because they were making out, it starts to get troublesome and excessive. Be happy, be in love, but also remember people have places to be so be aware and maybe find a better place to show love.
