Christmas is described as the “most wonderful time of the year” a season filled with joy, snow falling from the sky, and the love of family filling your heart. Bright lights and the exchanging of gifts all create this excitement that millions of people look forward to every year. For some, Christmas is a chance to gather with family, and enjoy warm homemade meals. However, this version of the holidays can mask a deeper reality for many individuals. Not everyone experiences Christmas as a time of happiness.
For some, the holiday season can usher in feelings of loneliness, sadness, and even anger. People who have lost loved ones, live far away from home, or do not have other means suffer. The constant reminder of togetherness can create a heavier feeling of isolation leading to what people know as “Christmas blues.”
Not every family is fortunate enough to gift their loved ones. The pressure to shop, decorate, and join in all the holiday activities can become quickly overwhelming for some. December itself can be a gloomy time. The short days and long nights allow what people know as seasonal depression to quietly sneak in, making it hard to feel the joy everyone else seems to have.
For younger people, watching their peers and friends get nice and shiny gifts while they get little to nothing can cause feelings of shame and disappointment. Adults might feel guilty or stressed about not being able to provide gifts to their children or give them that sense of holiday magic they see all around them. Financial struggle can turn what is supposed to be a joyful time into a month filled with worry and anxiety. Almost every year people post on all social media platforms the things they have gotten on Christmas just to boast about the nice things they have.
As the holiday season continues, remember that many may still be struggling to navigate the complexities of joy and sorrow. For those struggling, know that you are not alone and that the true spirit of Christmas can be found through the love and connection we feel with others.
