It is early in the morning, and you reach for your phone to consume your daily scroll. Your day has just begun and BOOM, you are hit with a wave of trauma and drama that has nothing to do with you. Starting your day off on a negative note with information you did not ask for nor care about. This information then festers in your mind all day. Whether you are the one consuming this unwanted information or the one posting it, it is mutually agreed upon that it was unnecessary to share such things.
When it comes down to the nitty gritty, it may be intriguing to some, not because they are sympathizing with you, but because they are laughing at you. No one will hold your hand and coddle you about the things you actively and consciously post for everyone to see. You might be reciprocating the content you view, but you are responsible for what you post on your social media platform and your image.

According to Forbes.com, “…oversharing online is linked to anxiety, attention-seeking and social media addiction. Individuals often turn to social media to cope with feelings of loneliness and make friends online when they are struggling with real-world connections…oversharing online can also create a false sense of closeness with a large audience, fostering a belief in meaningful connections that may in reality be superficial.”

No one can control what you choose to post, but there should be some awareness of what is appropriate and what is not to share. If you feel like you fall victim to oversharing, you could be facing deeper issues than what it is you are dealing with on the surface. Venting to your social media followers through the notes feature using vague language or a clip of a song will not help you in the long run. Once you outgrow your teenage mindset, you will look back and cringe at yourself.
Some things are sacred. Above all things the personal details in one’s life should be protected. Even if something is post worthy, take a second to reflect. You never know if you will regret having shared this story later.
