Although there are many positive things going on at UACHS, things like helpful teachers who really care, a tight knit community, and plenty of opportunities to learn. There is still one huge thing that continues to evade us and that is school assemblies.
Unlike other schools where students gather for announcements, celebrations, or discussions, we mostly rely on emails and morning announcements to share information. While they get the job done, they just do not give the same sense of connection that being together in person does.
Coming together as a school comes with several benefits. It gives students a chance to connect and engage with others. It helps boost morale around the school. These are moments to celebrate achievements, hear from teacher or staff directly, and discuss important topics as a school community.
Relying on emails or occasional announcements can be problematic. It is easy to not see an email, miss it in your inbox, or simply not hear an announcement. When that happens, important information can be misunderstood, miscommunicated, or even completely missed.
The closest thing we have to an assembly space is the black box on the North Side, which is used for small performances which are usually held after school or the AFC that is used not only for gym, but also pep rallies. The problem with the black box is that it is too small to hold all of us and usage of the AFC is dependent on NJCU.
Currently, when there are special speakers we are called down grade by grade to the black box to listen. It would be nice if this same method could be used to view shows like the winter showcase or even the talent show. This way students can build excitement and school spirit. They can experience the benefits of assemblies without worrying about space limitations. It might take a bit of planning, but it can be accomplished.
High school is about more than just class and homework, it is about community and connection. By finding a way to hold assemblies, even in smaller groups, UACHS can make the school feel more united and alive. Emails are helpful, but some things are just better in person.
