The government shutdown which lasted 43 days will be in history books as the longest shutdown in United States history. Its impact on American citizens has been severe and although it ended, Americans continue to face adversity. Millions suffered due to loss of employment, lack of wages, or disruption of travel.
Federal employees were forced to deplete their savings or wound up at food banks around the country. Many military families also found themselves in need of assistance due to a disruption in the receipt of their wages.
The effects of this shutdown are ultimately reaching the point where things may be damaged beyond repair; Although the shutdown is over federal workers are struggling with a backlog of work, continuing disruptions, and there may be long term economic consequences.
The shutdown occurred due to a failure between Republicans and Democrats to agree on how to fund federal government operations. Simply speaking, the U.S government needs a budget approved by Congress each year to be able to pay for its services and if it is not approved in the allotted time a “lapse,” occurs.
The disagreement between Democrats and Republicans stems from each party’s idea of fair distribution over healthcare, specifically the ACA also known as Obamacare. Democrats’ viewpoint is that there is a need to extend expired tax credits that could assist in reducing health insurance costs for a huge sum of citizens. On the other hand, Republicans opposed this idea since there would be subsidies in the funding legislation.
President Donald Trump decided to sign the legislation, on November 12, 2025, that officially ended the shutdown. Still he blames all this chaos on Democrats as he directs his attention toward them by saying, “We can never let this happen again… This is no way to run a country.”
The resolution extends our nation’s debt, adding $1.8 trillion a year to the already standing $38 trillion US debt.
In the end, the funding bill is only temporary so no further harm is done, especially around the holidays. We may see another shutdown as the resolution only funds the government through January 30, 2026.
