With the 2025-26 NBA season coming to a close in a few months, the playoff race in both conferences has been the most competitive it has been in recent years. What once looked very predictable in October, has turned into a battle for seeding, momentum, and surviving in both conferences.
In the Western Conference, the Oklahoma City Thunder have lived up to expectations and are sitting near the top of the standings and looking like a very serious contender. Their consistency on the offensive and defensive end of the floor has separated them from many other teams in the league. The Denver Nuggets remain close, relying on their playoff experience and efficient offense to remain in the hunt for home court advantage, but with how competitive and deep the west is, it may take perfection in order to reach this spot.
The Houston Rockets have taken a major leap this season, turning a very promising young core of players into a disciplined playoff ready team. The addition of Kevin Durant during the off season made things even more competitive for the Rockets. Their improved lockdown defense and fast-paced offense have allowed them to compete with top tier opponents. One opponent, the San Antonio Spurs have also exceeded expectations. From being a bottom team in the west to a top four team proves that they are way ahead of schedule for their development. With their luck in having top four picks in the last 3 years, along with other first round picks, they have developed a young and ready team. Both of these teams have positioned themselves to make the playoffs and challenge other high seeds.
On the other hand, the Los Angeles Clippers started very inconsistent, but are now in a firm play-in mix after making some adjustments. The Golden State Warriors and Los Angeles Lakers also remain as very dangerous teams, with veteran experience that may be crucial in a short series.
In the Eastern Conference, the Boston Celtics have maintained their status of being a top contender in the East, even without their superstar Jayson Tatum; with other great teams in the East, they will have to work hard to make a big push in the playoffs.
The Cleveland Cavaliers have built a very efficient lineup this year, especially with the addition of James Harden at the trade deadline.
The New York Knicks are also a serious threat in the East. With them being known as a physical and clutch team, the Knicks have turned close, record-threatening games, into statement wins. This consistency keeps them in reach of a top seed.
The Detroit Pistons, a serious sleeper in the East, have been proving all the doubters wrong. With being a lottery team a few years ago to a top seed in the East, the Pistons have definitely exceeded expectations.
A big surprise in the east are the Charlotte Hornets. After entering the season not expected to be a play-in team, they have flipped the script and made a late push for it, which has reshaped how teams around the league see them.
With standings separated by a few games and trades reshaping player rotations, the final week is promised to be intense. While the Boston Celtics and Oklahoma City Thunder appear the strongest on paper to make the 2026 NBA Finals, the postseason may belong to any team who peaks at the exact right time.
