The arrival of cold weather in Hudson County, kicks off the winter sports season. With the cold weather coming in and the warm weather saying goodbye, UACHS offers several sports to their students including boys and girls basketball and indoor track.
Hudson County athletes are preparing themselves for the competitions ahead all while learning teamwork and leadership skills.
One of the most popular sports at UACHS is basketball, which has been hosting tryouts since late November and is still ongoing. Event organizers are putting the final touches on the boys’ and girls’ game schedules, with several games happening in the next few weeks.
Regardless of the sport, in order to be prepared, athletes must work on their technique and conditioning. Senior Zaire Cross stresses the importance of practice.
“Practice, practice always gets people better,” said Cross. “For me, it is important to make the team better so we can win games.”
Aside from practice Cross knows that an integral part of being on a team is teamwork and that in order to be successful you need to work together.
“We are going to work together as a team,” said Cross. “I will make sure everyone gets their touches; make sure everybody’s doing what they have to do on the court.”
The Generals basketball team has their first game scheduled on December 13 against Bridgewater-Raritan, and the Lady Generals basketball team has their first game on December 19 against McNair.
The other popular winter sport is Indoor track. For the ones who generally don’t want to run 200 or 3,200 meter dashes, indoor track also offers shot put, long jump, high jump, and triple jump. Tryouts have already begun and will conclude on December 11 with practice going on almost everyday. Teams will meet at the armory in Journal Square for their season which will begin with their opening on December 13.
Conditioning and staying ready is no different for runners whose practice features warm ups, sprints, and mile races to boost their performance in each event. Constant practice and preparation helps build their stamina and energy when they enter actual races.
Meets are ongoing until February and will involve different schools from Hudson County and surrounding areas.
With the winter season underway, let’s make sure to lend our support to our athletes who work on their sport year round and are super dedicated.
If you can make it to games and meets do so. Every bit of support matters. Let’s celebrate their teamwork, dedication, and school spirit.
