When you think of football, most people think of tough broad shouldered men in headgear and shoulder pads. No one ever thinks of a woman in that position.
There have always been stereotypical opinions about girls playing football. With girls flag football rising in popularity, people are beginning to notice that gender should not be a determining factor of who can play.
The same motivation and drive boys have for football may be the same for girls who want to play flag football. With the right mindset and coaching, girls can be just as good if not better than regular boys’ flag football teams.
Stereotypical opinions tend to be the downfall of many enthusiastic people. These opinions often stop someone from discovering their greatness before it starts. While some people may not have a good opinion about girl’s flag football, there are others who think otherwise.
UACHS senior and student athlete, Basir Shivers, believes girls can benefit from flag football.
“Football is a way for me to express my emotions,” said Shivers. “Everybody needs a type of escape so if girls want to play the sport, this is the perfect one.”
Students are voicing their opinions about there being a new extracurricular sport and flag football would be an exciting addition if the athletic director and coaches would get on board.
Whether it’s a boy sport or not, gender should not determine who plays what game. Instead, allowing everyone to have fun doing what they love is the real touchdown.
