Coaching at UACHS means balancing a passion for a sport while working off limited resources for proper training. Without a weight room, fewer athletes than most schools, and students with a lack of experience, coaches here often face challenges. Despite these hurdles, their passion for their teams drives them to instill lessons that extend beyond wins and losses.
Baseball coach, Richard Miller, emphasizes that watching the team fall in love with the sport outweighs the fact that there are limited resources.
“Many kids at this level haven’t been playing as long, so I find myself teaching more fundamentals,” said Miller. “Their new-found love for the game makes it all worth it.”
Instead of viewing the lack of resources as a setback compared to wealthier districts, he does not let this affect his goal. Miller focuses not on what his players lack, but on the life skills like discipline and teamwork, believing these are the true wins for his players.
Boys basketball coach, Marques Robinson, expresses a similar sentiment. Coaching is more than just a sport, it’s a vehicle for personal growth and life lessons.
“I constantly tell my players ‘It’s you versus you,” said Robinson. “My goal is to prepare them for life, not just basketball.”
Coaches at UACHS are teaching resilience, hard work, and life lessons that will last beyond high school.
For athletes and coaches alike, in spite of the lack of resources, it’s about working hard and taking pride in every small victory.
“To all my athletes, understand that while you may not have things that other students have, trust and know that you have everything you need when you look in the mirror at yourself,” Said Robinson.
While we do not have all of the same amenities as other schools, we work with what we have.
