National Honor Society: Making tomorrow’s leaders

Although the process of getting good grades may be tedious and tiring– working

hard pays off. Attaining A’s and B’s on report cards give students the opportunity to be accepted into honors and AP courses.

As students continue to strive for high scores, guidance eventually creates a list of student names for the National Honor Society. The National Honor Society invites students with a GPA of 3.8 and higher to join.

In order to maintain membership in the NHS students must meet the requirements of grades 93 or above, including demonstrating good character as well as eligible leadership to others.

The UACHS National Honor Society is organized by Junior English teacher, Amina Farah. Its mission is to bring people together while promoting services and raising funds for the community.

Farah believes that the NHS is crucial because it enables students to concentrate on their studies and fulfill their roles by giving back to the community.

“I think when students focus on their studies and are highly driven, they have an obligation to share that with their community,” said Farah. “It’s important for this club and it means a lot to me because a lot of the students are students I teach.”

The NHS benefits the community by distributing food, money donations to students and their communities.

According to www.nhs.us, “Each year, the average NHS contributes to 1,000 hours of school and community services, $26,000 in charitable donations, and 1,000 pounds of food to local and national causes.”

Junior and president of the NHS, Eman Atshan believes that their goal is acknowledging the qualities of members who join the NHS and improving their education.

“Members of the club are unique, it gives us the opportunity to express ourselves, and increase our academic abilities,” said Atshan. “I believe its purpose is to promote leadership and develop characteristics that are unique to people that join the club.”

As students strive to maintain good grades, the society helps to keep students on the right track and overall look sharp on their college applications. The NHS will continue to teach and share with students the true meaning of community service and what it truly means to be a leader and role model.
