Who Runs the World: GIRLS!

Sojourner Truth once said, “If the first woman God ever made was strong enough to turn the world upside down all alone, these women together ought to be able to turn it back, and get it right side up again…” Women have made and still make an honorable contribution to the world we live in today.
The National Women’s History Alliance (NWHA), formerly known as the National Women’s History Project, was established in 1980 to highlight the significance of women’s history. This led to President Jimmy Carter issuing a presidential proclamation declaring the week of March 8th as ‘Women’s History Week’. As time progressed, an additional proclamation by President Reagan declared March as “Women’s History Month.”
Every year, the NWHA selects a theme. According to Womenshistory.org, this year’s theme, Valiant Women of The Vote, pays homage to “the brave women who fought to win suffrage rights for women, and for the women who continue to fight for the voting rights of others.”
As for UACHS, English IIII and dual credit teacher, Jacqueline Thompson, is directing a Women’s Day event with the goal to inspire. Thompson was also the director of last year’s women’s event and plans to make some improvements to give young women a better experience.
“ This year I plan to have new speakers, student performances, a female DJ, and vendors,” said Thompson. “The intention of this event is to give the women an opportunity to interact with female trailblazers in jersey city”.
Thompson believes that women are at the heart of everything we do, whether we are emotionally connected to them or not. Girls should have the chance to see more than their everyday norm, there are plenty of career options that are open to women then what we are exposed to.
“I hope that girls will leave inspired and have more knowledge about the opportunities women have” said Thompson.
With March 20th coming right around, female students cannot wait to see what Thompson has in store. Women are being recognized a lot more and finally UACHS has joined in all the fun.
