Although Lupe Fiasco’s highly anticipated sophomore album was pushed back, it was worth the wait. The Chicago-based rapper released his album on Dec.18. As soon I listened to the album I hailed it an “instant classic.” Throughout the album Fiasco touches on topics from the supposed death of hip-hop to immigration in the states. The 19-track album is arguably the most underrated CD of the year so far.
The album starts off with a poem recited by Iesha Jaco; she speaks about different events that affected many people nation-wide, like hurricane Katrina and the Virginia Tech shootings. He follows it up with a fast beat track called “Go Go Gadget Flow” which is a dedication to his hometown of Chicago. One song that stood out is “Intruder Alert.” It starts like a R&B song but soon is followed up with a serious rap verse talking about a rape victim, the second verse, about a former drug attic and an immigrant in the third. One of Lupe’s shining moments is on the song “Dumb It Down,” this song is a response to those who doubted his style by saying that he wasn’t true hip-hop and that he was going over people’s heads with his vocabulary. In the song Lupe tells those who doubt him that he won’t sell-out to make money. This album is definitely worth buying.
