For most, it takes a couple attempts to find their true calling in life. However, for Gihan Abdelrahman, her true calling found her at a young age. With a background in Microbiology and a love for teaching, she is quickly becoming a part of the school’s community and hopes to be the stepping stone for students to find their passion early on.
With two master degrees in Microbiology from Grand Canyon University, along with a bachelor’s in Chemistry and Anthropology, Abdelrahman worked as a Microbiologist and scientist. However, her passion went far beyond the bounds of the lab.
Her desire to educate students about microbiology led her to earn her teaching certifications in both New York and New Jersey.
“I started working as a microbiologist and scientist and then I liked teaching and learning so I went through with this field,” said Abdelrahman.
Her journey to teaching began on the other side of the world. Originally from Egypt, Abdelrahman spent most of her childhood in Saudi Arabia before moving to the United States. She was fascinated by microorganisms from an early age, which led her to study more deeply in college. Through her studies, she developed a strong interest in the biotechnology and genetic engineering fields which she still finds exciting today.
“I like genetic engineering and how I could use it in bioengineering,” said Abdelrahman.
Outside of her enthusiasm for science, Abdelrahman says her favorite part of being at UACHS is the people.
“I like the students, they are nice and are dedicated to learning,” said Abdelrahman. “I also like the staff, the admin, everything.”
Abdelrahman is eager to support students beyond the classroom by helping them explore their own creative and scientific interests. She hopes to encourage students to think outside the box and try hands-on projects.
“I would like students to launch their imagination and find some creative ideas,” Said Abdelrahman. “If they want to do experiments, lab work, or robotics, I can help them.”
Abdelrahman encourages all students to get involved, whether they already have an idea in mind or need help discovering one.
Outside the classroom, Abdelrahman enjoys spending her free time reading and travelling. These interests continue to inspire her curiosity and passion for learning, just like science always has.
Through her experience and enthusiasm, Abdelrahman hopes to spark curiosity in her students the same way she found hers.
With her eagerness to learn as her spark and science as her guide, Abdelrahman is helping students discover just how far their imagination can go.
