When brought up in a city, you develop what is often known as a sixth sense or an additional intelligence. This ability is what is often referred to as street smarts.
For many of us, especially those of us that live in Jersey City, our street smarts are tested on a daily basis.
Those who grow up in a more suburban area are typically accustomed to a safer environment with a slower pace of life, while those who live in more urban areas are typically used to a fast paced life with tons of people. In some instances, living in an urban area means that you are not always in a “safe” environment.
Growing up in an urban city, survival is key. You must constantly keep your head on a swivel, keeping track of what areas you are in, all while focusing on what people are around. This skill eventually becomes a natural instinct.
Even when you have knowledge of the area, being alert is key. You should always expect the unexpected. If you are not one step ahead you are ten steps behind.
UACHS sophomore, Senala Dwight, believes that having street smarts makes it easier for her to go about her city.
“The city is overwhelming within itself,” said Dwight. “Being in the wrong place at the wrong time can lead to unexpected outcomes, but once you learn how to get around, the adjustments make it easier to live here.”
Simply relying on caution is not enough. When journeying throughout the city, move with a purpose. Being aware of the people around you, their body language, unusual behaviors and recognizing isolated areas can help you navigate through the city.
Continue to look around, keeping your head high, and trust your gut feeling if something feels off. Navigating through this city may be a challenge, but when you do find your way, the city can unleash its true beauty.
