At the beginning of this school year, you may have noticed some changes throughout the school. One of the more noticeable changes is the addition of a new staff of security. The school’s new head of security, Lorenzo Tosado is a retired Jersey police lieutenant, who is no stranger to his new role of keeping kids safe.
Tosado was born and raised in Jersey City and West New York, New Jersey. He attended West New York’s Memorial High School. Then went on to attend Bergen Community College which is where he got his associates degree. He now attends Rutgers where he is currently working on getting his bachelor’s degree.
Tosado patrolled the streets of Jersey City, all while rising through the ranks to eventually become a Lieutenant. After being on the force for almost three decades he decided to retire.
“ I had spent 29 years on the force and was a Lieutenant; I just felt it was time to go,” said Tosado.
However, he was not ready to leave the workforce behind just yet. While considering possible career moves, Tosado had a slight interest in becoming a substitute teacher, but after having a talk with his wife he finally decided to venture into the world of security.
His background made him the perfect fit for the new security here at UACHS. Although Tosado has only been here for a few months we have already seen a decrease in student hallway traffic. Tosado’s main goal is student safety.
“No matter if it’s a drill or the real thing, success is making sure that everybody gets home safe to their families,” said Tosado.
With the new security around and Tosado’s background in law enforcement, the school feels different and for him it’s due to better safety. Along with keeping safe he hopes to leave a mark.
“Working in a highschool is just learning who everyone is, knowing every one’s name, and getting to know who they are,” said Tosado. “I’m hoping that they know my influence when I talk to them and know that I’m here to help them whether it is with safety or whatever it is in life.”
