Imagine, you are scrolling through your mutuals’ stories on Instagram and you see they are reposting the fun events happening at their school. They have things like spirit week, pep rallies, fundraisers, holiday events, fun after school activities, and etc. This makes you look at UACHS and realize that these things happen once in a blue moon.
You notice how unfair it is that other schools get to have the events you have always wanted to experience. Instead, you go through a repetitive schedule with rarely any events to look forward to. This all leads to the question; Why is our school different from the others?
Every year, there seems to be less and less events. The main thing we mostly get to experience is spirit week, which only occurs once a year.
Last year, we were lucky enough to have a pep rally and support our teachers in a game of basketball. This was leading into spring break. After that, there really wasn’t much to look forward to except for the last day of school and the end of the year trips.
Junior, Jesslin Richardson, feels that having no special events at school affects her motivation to show up everyday.
“I honestly dread going to school because there really is nothing to look forward to but going to class and doing work,” said Richardson. “It’s kinda sad that all we do is work, work, work, and are rewarded with so little.”
As students, we all deserve to have a bit of fun. Keeping up with academics all the time can get stressful. Incorporating simple things like assemblies and class fundraisers can motivate students the slightest bit and push them to want to come to school. However, we as students also have to show the teachers and administrators that we deserve these events.
A junior at UACHS, who wishes to remain anonymous, believes the behavior of students plays a big part in why we do not have any events.
“I think money is a main factor as to why we barely have events, but I also feel like it ties in with the students. Depending on how the students behave, that’s when the admin decides whether or not we deserve to have such things. We can’t keep blaming the school, it depends on us at the same time.”
With the schools’ new additions and more students coming in, adding events could benefit the students’ view of the school. They can spread the word to their friends in other schools about the things going on in our school which could lead to more people wanting to apply. Instead of solely focusing on building up the school, events can bring up students’ morale and lead to students having more UACHS pride.
Though events are not essential to learning or our future, they are essential to the memories students will hold with them after high school.
It is up to us as students to show our teachers and administration that while work is important, it is essential to have a little fun once in a while. At the end of the day, we are responsible for whatever happens in the school and we can all help implement events we know we deserve.
