Imagine, you are scrolling on your Tiktok “for you” page, and you come across this influencer who posts about their seemingly perfect lifestyle. While they are traveling the world for photoshoots, brand deals, and vacations, you’re stuck in your sad little room watching other people living a dream life. As viewers, we enjoy seeing what they display on their social media, but we never really know what goes on behind the scenes. Beyond what we don’t see, there are unspoken issues that influencers experience that are not discussed.
For many content creators, prioritizing mental health can be difficult as they are expected to post every day. The constant comments from strangers, and the worry that people are not reacting to your content the way you want them to, can have a negative impact on your wellbeing.
Sofia Chen, a student at NYU, who recently started her journey as a content creator on TikTok, agrees that social media can affect one’s mental health.
“Every morning, the first thing I check is my views, and that determines my mood for the rest of the day,” said Chen. “Even though I know it’s negatively affecting my mental health, social media can be very addicting.”
Balancing the pressure of trying to stay relevant on social media as content creators is also an ongoing struggle that many try to find their way out of; regardless of their personal life.
“Although I enjoy it, it is very tiring having to juggle creating content/editing/posting alongside my real life duties such as school,” said Chen. “It’s a lot of pressure.”
In this society, there are misconceptions about how social media affects an average person’s mental health. We have to remember that these influencers are real people, with genuine problems and worries just like us.
Just because your favorite social media person doesn’t say anything about it, this does not mean nothing is going on in their personal life.
Whether it’s content creators or regular users who just browse the internet, these are real people behind the screen, with real hearts, and real emotions.
Before commenting on someone else’s post, remind yourself that these content creators have feelings and could be getting affected not only by you but others as well.
