Beauty has become a twisted concept amongst the teens of this generation. Whether it is
caking a pound of makeup onto your face in the morning right before you go to school or spending half your paycheck on your bi-weekly lash appointment; the beauty industry has taken over teens’ everyday life.
As of Late, lashes have become one of the most popular trends amongst teens. When trying a new look, many people look into purchasing lashes; whether it be strip lashes, clusters, or individual lashes installed by a professional.
The origin of long lashes dates to 2500 BCE when the Egyptians first used ointments and brushes to achieve a fluttery fanned-out lash look.
According to Statistica.com,“In 2017, the U.S. generated about 206.4 million U.S. dollars from false eyelashes sales.”
When scrolling through social media, you see these women with the most gorgeous lashes. Other times, you see people get these obnoxious lashes looking as if they can barely see you. Many of us have seen the fact that oftentimes the lashes end up looking like waterbugs above the eyes.
Going through the hassle of sitting in a chair for hours is tiring and time consuming. According to Borboleta.com, “Your very first lash appointment will be a full set of lashes (aka a fresh set) and will take around 2 ½ to 3 hours to complete. If you are going to get your lashes filled or for a fill (aka adding more lashes to an existing lash set) it will take between 60 minutes to 2 hours, depending on the look and lash artist speed.”
Not only that, the cost of lashes are sometimes expensive.
According to today.com, “Eyelash extensions cost between $150 and $300 for a full set, meaning 80 to 150 extensions per eye, TODAY.com previously reported. Touch-ups cost $75 to $100 every two to three weeks.”
With the popularity of people wearing lashes, people forget to go the traditional route
and use their regular lashes. They fail to realize that the constant use of false lashes without cleaning them properly or letting them breathe increases the risk of damaging your eyelashes. Signs of your eyelashes getting damaged are them falling out or becoming brittle and weak. When this happens you are urged to go to the emergency room or ophthalmologist so you do not cause more damage to your eyes.
Another issue in the beauty industry is that many people believe they can license themselves as lash specialists. Sure it is one thing to do your lashes, but doing them on other people becomes risky.
According to law.com, “ A lady sued an unlicensed technician for impairing her vision.”
Although lashes look beautiful on some, are they really worth the beauty or are they a scam to make people waste money?
