The legalization of Marijuana has led to many misconceptions. Lies that are mainly believed by minors. While adults over the age of 21 can use it recreationally, people under this age cannot. However, with dispensaries and smoke shops sprouting on every corner; access has become even easier than before.
Lately, it seems like every time someone goes to the bathroom they walk through a cloud of smoke and the students of UACHS need to realize that although they are in high school, they are not as “grown” as most of them believe they are. They may think there are no consequences to what they are doing but there is a hefty price to pay and it is one that they are not even paying. Sometimes, it is their parents paying the price.
Being caught with a prohibited substance at UACHS can have severe consequences for students. Not only does it violate school policies and state laws, but it also results in immediate action, including suspension and the possibility of alerting the authorities. The permanent stain on your school record can affect college admissions and job opportunities.
According to the 2023-2024 UACHS handbook, “The Dean/Principal shall immediately notify the Parent or Legal Guardian of the suspected use. It is the responsibility of the Parent or Legal Guardian to ensure that their child completes an immediate full panel substance screening and medical examination. UACHS Staff and/or Dean/Principal will be available to facilitate this process, which must be completed within twenty-four (24) hours.”
The purpose of this policy is not only in place to identify students who may have a problem with substance abuse. It also exists to put an end to the delusional idea that smoking and getting high is a normal thing to do while in school.
Students should know that smoking in school can not go on with out facing repercussions. For those of you who believe that you can continue to do this and get away with it, don’t be surprised if one day you get a rude wake up call when your parents are called to the school and are forced to get several drug tests.
