Here at UACHS, we have support staff members, who keep the school afloat. They do not teach the classes however, they are busy making sure the students, teachers and other staff members are safe and that non-instructional duties within the school building happen without incident. For the past eighteen years–that person is Daisy Rodriguez.
Before joining the school, she worked a corporate job for 16 years, but realized that she needed a change of scenery. The constant traveling and time consuming hours became overbearing. Rodriguez saw an opportunity had arisen here at UACHS and took it.
“The school was convenient for me because it was right near my home,” said Rodriguez. “I also had just left my previous employer and was looking for somewhere new.”
After working at UACHS for 18 years, she has watched hundreds of kids graduate. She has seen them transform from pre-teens to young adults ready to face the real world.
Working in an environment that is full of young adults is challenging however, in the end it is worth it.
“It is good getting to know the students but it is sad having to say goodbye after four years of being around them,” said Rodriguez.
Rodriguez did not really see herself working with kids before she landed at UACHS.
However, as the years passed, she developed close and genuine friendships with students and fellow staff.
After the students graduate, there is a chance they may never see any of their teachers or mentors from high school again however, most UACHS students do not allow that to happen. Many return after time to give teachers and other staff a life update to let them know that things have worked out.
“We have a special love for students that have a good vibe with us,” said Rodriguez. “When they come back to visit, that makes us feel so good and appreciated.”
While those who are in the classroom play a vital role in cultivating our learning experience, it is important to remember that there are others behind the scenes that go above and beyond to ensure that our high school experience is a comfortable one. From small talks in between classes, to making sure the school day flows effortlessly; UACHS truly would not be the same without Daisy Rodriguez.
