Actor, producer and director Giancarlo Esposito spoke at Hudson County Community College November 11 about working to become an actor and how today’s technology-focused society distracts people from reaching their goals.

The Student Voice had the opportunity to speak to Esposito before the event and asked him what message he had for young adults who are trying to find their way.

“Students should definitely have commitment and visiting the museum and listening to music can help them get ready for their entertainment careers,” Esposito said. Reading a lot is the number one thing that helps, he said.

Esposito is starring in the NBC show “Revolution” and ABC show “Once Upon a Time,” but he is most popular for his character Gus Fring on “Breaking Bad.” He won a Critics Choice Award in 2012 and was also nominated in the same year.

Esposito said he enjoys speaking in front of audiences because he has the opportunity to pass on what he has learned to future actors.     Being an actor is not just standing in front of a mirror and reading a script, it is much more, he said.

“Being a true actor is not easy,” Esposito said. “You need commitment.”

Esposito said he always knew he wanted to become an actor and to have the chance to experience different careers.

“I wanted to learn about how it feels to be a drug dealer, cop and lawyer,” Esposito said. “By acting I have that opportunity to find out.”

Esposito said he believes that everyone can reach their goal.

“Everybody has the opportunity to do whatever they want, and what they need is somewhere nobody else can take it from them,” Esposito said.

One of Esposito’s favorite quotes about this is something his mother always told him.

“No one can take away what’s between your ears and what’s in your heart.”
