Seniors OK with new trip destination

by: Marina Keryakous

The class of 2014 went to the Poconos Valley instead of the usual senior trip to an amusement park. The school is no longer approving field trips to amusement parks, following a directive from the interim Hudson County superintendent of schools, according to Dean Erie Lugo.

Administrators were told by Interim Hudson County Superintendent of Schools Monica M. Tone during an October 2013 meeting that schools should no longer approve trips to amusement parks due to liability issues, Lugo said.

Senior advisor Joseph Timpanaro said he had wanted to support Seaside’s economy that is still recovering from Superstorm Sandy by taking the seniors there this year.

“It would be great to go to Seaside again, so that we can help with the Jersey Shore economy, and it’s something we did two years ago that the students enjoyed,” Timpanaro said.

However, the Poconos trip will be some students’ first time experiencing being at a lake with so many activities to do, Timpanaro said.

“It’s awesome, this is the first time a graduating class has gone to the Poconos,” Timpanaro said. “A lot of kids have never been to a lake area where you can canoe and kayak.”

Both seniors and juniors interviewed by The Student Voice said doing something different other than an amusement park would be enjoyable.

“I think going to the Poconos would be a nice trip,” senior Shadae Waiters said. “Everyone goes to Seaside and amusement parks for all their senior strips, ours would be more fun and different.”

Junior Abraham Dizen said this would be a great advantage for him since he is an athlete.

“I prefer to go to the Poconos because there are many activities besides swimming and getting a tan,” Dizen said. “As an athlete the Poconos sounds like a unique way of interacting with my classmates outside of school and also is good for expressing my abilities outside of school.”

The activities at Poconos Valley include rock climbing, row boats, canoes, pedal boats, swimming, water basketball, Inflatable air-zone, tennis, softball, soccer, golf volleyball, bumper balls, kayaks, dancing and more.
